smile! we have a winner

But before we get down to the business, let's have a little look at a post-deadline submission from alyssa:

Thanks alyssa - that's certainly brought a smile to my face on a Friday morning.

Back to the matter in hand, though (no pun intended): and let's do this in style. So I've brought out my best Panama for perhaps its last airing this year and tinkered around a bit with my best Bodoni.

Folded the numbers into quarters so they can't be seen.

Into the hat and give them a good shake.

And voilà (a nod to Loïc there)...

...the winner is Mike with his homage to our friends across the water.

Well done Mike, and congratulations! Your Eurostar tickets will be winging their way to you (sort of) even as I type.

So, that was fun wasn't it? And a big, big thanks to Sarah and the crew at we are social and, of course, Eurostar for donating the prize.

smile! we have a shortlist

OK, so the smileometer's been deployed by the very capable Sarah at we are social and we now have a shortlist of five possible winners of the competition.

First of all though, I must explain that the awesome cat was a favourite of very many of us. The problem is that it was submitted by Loïc who happens to be in France already, so therefore can't really make use of the Eurostar tickets. Loïc explains that "I only played this game for the fun of it, for the sport - and because this cat is awesome" and has therefore requested not to be included in the shortlist. Thank you, Loïc - you are a gent.

So, that leaves the rest of you. And with no further ado I can announce that the shortlist is #5, #8, #9, #18 and #22. And the eagle-eyed amongst you will no doubt spot that Mike's in there twice. But Richard, Martin and Emma do have an equal chance* of winning, since those five now go into my Panama hat: I'll then don my blindfold and pick the winner tomorrow morning.
