I've given up on Vienna (nice interface, but its habit of skipping posts for no apparent reason drove me to distraction). Now I'm trying NewsFire. Mostly because I absolutely hate this:
No, I don't want to look for new stuff to add. And, no, I don't want an 'artist' theme. Thank you very much.
You're a search engine. Get over it.
You should try this: http://helvetireader.com/

Mmmm, I have been having the same problems and concerns for ages. Tried this, tried that and nothing can satisfy me really. Everything kind of nice in the beginning and then ... I am bored of it!
The solution? I turned back to GoogleReader with the Helvetica theme (http://helvetireader.com/) that runs as a Fluid.app and so standalone and not even in the Safari's browser. It's great, feels like an application and has all the functionality of Google Reader..
But yet again, I might get bored of it in a month or so! :)

I've been using Google Reader for a while without any theme at all. As for the screen David shows above - never seen it.

Just don't use iGoogle. Go directly to google.com/reader. Way better.

Some good advice there chaps - thanks. I'll give helvetireader a go (and it's even prompted me to think of a new blog topic: '52 rss readers you could use instead of helvetireader'!).
Winnie: the iGoogle screen is what you get when you're logged into your Google account - and you have to be signed into your Google account if you want to use any of their services: FeedBurner, for instance.
And Todd: that sort of answers your point as well, as I don't want to spend my day logging in and out of my Google account.

Just to show that someone is always even more old-school than you are, I like to get my RSS by email. Feedblitz has a nice service where you can just right-click the rss buttons on blogs (and I think it works even if you just use the URL) copy it, go to www.feedblitz.com and add them to your account. Then they send you one email a day with all your feeds in it. DavidTheDesigner comes to my mailbox.

I struggled with Google Reader, and tried helvetireader but felt it was still too clunky. I've had the most success with Feedly (http://www.feedly.com) which I was put on to recently by a work-mate.
IMHO it looks great and the UI is pretty well considered;
It's not too daunting to use as a beginner and offers a lot of functionality that you can 'grow' in to as you explore.
