Hello, like the previous postman I'm also kindly invited by David to post interesting items on his blog.
No further introduction of me needed I guess, as David put some nice words earlier online. Although I'm a bit nervous of bringing the European leftfield side of design to digital life... The ideas for posts keep coming up. It's quite different than my own blog (www.ok-blog.nl). That's visually orientated and is more a online source of inspiration. My name is William and here it goes:
You can't avoid not getting concerend about the eco-system. Things are changing (due to people's way of living or the earth's changing itself or...) and we have to live with it. So a lot of people start thinking about what they can do to make a tiy relief for Mother Earth, graphic designers as well. In my own business we do some things too. Even our lunch is getting more and more 'bio'. If we have to print some books, posters or business cards we try to sell a FSC paper to client. As a professor (at ArtEZ Academy of Arnhem) there's one thing that I kept noticing. The contemporary generation (I'm feeling old now with only 28 years) has a constant struggle with online search engines, such as Google. After giving an assigment 9 out of 10 will probably google and try to come up with 'ideas' and parts for their design. A very strange way which is hard to unlearn it to them. Ideas don't come from Google or the internet!
But I could write a whole different topic about that. My concern is that (besides the overwhelming use of computers and tech devices) their search for thought on Google consumes a lot more energy than I could think of in the first place. Each search would consume the same amount of energy as making a cup of coffee. (Other stories tell it would be much much more). How many searches do you make each day?
Nope, I will try to use http://www.blackle.com/ instead. And if I don't get used to it (let's say after two days) than I will sleep with the lights out at night. ;)
