Paula Scher won't be going to the White House.

Dear Mrs. Bush:
While I have always applauded White House support of the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum and the design community, I will not be attending this year’s luncheon on July 18 in our honor.
The luncheon is a symbol of our government’s support of the design profession. I create symbols and know too well that a symbol is meaningless, even dangerous, when it serves as a front for harmful content.
This administration, that you loyally represent, is responsible for words and deeds that I find abhorrent, morally repugnant, and constitutionally questionable. Among them are a belligerent international rhetoric; a misguided, mismanaged, disastrous war in Iraq; a six and a half year denial of global warming; a continual disregard for the separation of church and state; an institutionalized policy of torture; a dangerously confusing dialog about evolution; a deliberate and unnecessary blockage of stem cell research; a bungled and insensitive response to Hurricane Katrina due to sloppy hack political appointments; a cruel use of homophobia in order to gain votes; as well as the continual determination to force women to have unwanted children.
In the fact of this list, support of the humanistic endeavor for “good design” seems irrelevant.
Sincerely,
Paula Scher
